Meteora, Kalambaka

Meteora is a fascinating geological phenomenon, estimated to have formed around 30 million years ago. These imposing grey rocks were created after massive seismic tremors raised a large piece of land. Over time, extreme weather conditions caused erosion, giving Meteora its current form. In the past, people of the area found refuge on these rocks to protect themselves from invaders and enemies. From the 13th century, some monks found their “sanctuary” there and built the Monastery of Great Meteora, while today, there are 6 monasteries. Meteora has often been called the second Mount Athos and has preserved Christian monastic traditions for nearly 700 years.

Kalambaka is built at the foot of Meteora, located on the northwestern side of the Thessalian plain. It has around 12,000 permanent residents and is one of the most famous destinations, attracting over 2 million tourists every year. In Kalambaka, you will find several interesting monuments to visit, dozens of taverns and cafés, a fairly large market, as well as hotels and rooms for your stay.
